Monolingualism is an impairment of social function in which an individual speaks only one language. It may have additional detrimental effects if the language an individual speaks does not pertain to their heritage or other cultural background, andor if the language is not spoken by others in the individual's immediate area thus isolating them. Monolingualism may be treated by gaining working knowledge of another language.
As is evident from the tone of the above, being monolingual is not held in high regard among the Bep. Nonetheless, it is very common, leading to a familiar pattern of many people feeling quite bad about themselves while not doing heaps about it.
